FSSAI Takes Action Against High Pesticide Levels in Fruits and Vegetables

In a bid to address the alarming presence of pesticides and harmful chemicals in fresh fruits and vegetables, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken significant steps to monitor their sale in markets nationwide. Several media reports raised concerns about the excessive use of pesticides, prompting the FSSAI to respond promptly.

As part of their efforts, the FSSAI has communicated with all Food Safety Commissioners across the country, acknowledging the media reports that highlighted the widespread issue of fruits and vegetables being sold with dangerously high pesticide content in major cities.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also taken suo-moto cognizance of the matter, recognizing the risks posed by the excessive use of pesticides by farmers. In response, the NHRC has directed the implementation of measures to minimize pesticide risks and encourage alternative cultivation methods.

The FSSAI’s recent order urges strict vigilance by State and Union Territory authorities to monitor Food Business Operators (FBOs) involved in the manufacturing and repackaging of fresh, surface-treated, and minimally processed fruits and vegetables. The aim is to curb the menace of excessive pesticide usage during pre-marketing treatment.

To ensure compliance with FSS – Contaminants, Toxins, and Residues – Regulations, the FSSAI has also encouraged the use of measures like surveillance, enforcement, and awareness activities. These measures are crucial in ensuring that the fruits and vegetables available to consumers meet safety standards.

Additionally, the FSSAI aims to raise awareness among consumers and food businesses about the issue through the “Eat Right” initiative. Information, education, and communication activities will be conducted in fruit and vegetable markets, creating awareness about the risks associated with high pesticide levels and promoting safer consumption practices.

The collective efforts of the FSSAI, NHRC, and other authorities indicate a commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring the availability of safe and healthy food options. By addressing the issue of excessive pesticide use in fruits and vegetables, they hope to make a significant impact on the overall well-being of the nation. Consumers can now look forward to a safer and healthier choice when purchasing fresh produce, as the FSSAI continues its monitoring and awareness-building efforts.
