The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India’s National Standards Body, has embarked on a pioneering mission aimed at raising awareness about the pivotal role of standards in enhancing our quality of life. BIS proudly announced the establishment of a remarkable 6,467 Standard Clubs within schools and colleges across the nation. This transformative initiative, which began in 2021, is dedicated to instilling an appreciation for quality, standards, and scientific inquiry among the youth.
In an official statement, BIS emphasized the importance of nurturing the younger generation’s understanding of quality, standardization, and their far-reaching impact on accelerated economic development. These Standard Clubs serve as vehicles for igniting the spark of curiosity and innovation in students, ultimately contributing to the transformation of Indian society.
As of now, these clubs have garnered an impressive membership of over 1.7 lakh enthusiastic students, predominantly from science backgrounds. Guided by dedicated science teachers who serve as mentors, these students engage in a wide array of activities designed to provide them with insights into the world of quality and standardization. Some of these activities include standards writing competitions, quiz competitions, debates, essay writing, poster making, and even exposure visits to laboratories and industrial units.
BIS has been actively supporting these educational institutions by providing financial assistance to organize these enlightening activities. Furthermore, mentors of Standard Clubs receive specialized training from BIS to ensure the effective dissemination of knowledge.
Recognizing the significance of practical learning, BIS has gone a step further by offering financial support to high and higher secondary Government Schools with Standard Clubs. They are entitled to receive a one-time Laboratory Grant of up to Rs. 50,000/-, which can be used to acquire state-of-the-art lab equipment to upgrade their Science Labs.
To create engaging and inspiring learning environments, BIS is also providing financial assistance of up to Rs. 1,00,000/- to establish ‘Manak Kaksha’ in government institutions where Standard Clubs are established. These refurbished spaces will be equipped with modern amenities such as smart TVs, audio-video systems, proper illumination, and vibrant wall decorations, fostering curiosity, and nurturing innovation among the students.
In sum, BIS’s commitment to quality and standards continues to shape the future of India by nurturing the minds of its youth. This visionary initiative not only promotes quality and standards but also empowers the younger generation to become responsible and quality-conscious citizens. It’s a transformative journey towards a stronger, more vibrant, and dynamic India, led by its future architects—the students.
