FSSAI’s Central Advisory Panel Proposes Extending Food Business Operator Licenses to 5 Years

In a significant move aimed at streamlining the regulatory framework for food businesses, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) announced that its central advisory committee has recommended extending licenses for food business operators (FBOs) to a period of five years. This adjustment marks a departure from the previous practice of granting licenses for a single year.

The pivotal decision was reached during the 41st meeting of the Central Advisory Committee (CAC) held in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. G. Kamala Vardhana Rao, the CEO of FSSAI, presided over the session and took stock of the ongoing efforts related to sampling food products across various states and Union Territories (UTs). Rao emphasized the importance of strict adherence to the prescribed quality and safety standards for food products.

A strong emphasis was placed on the role of states and UTs in ensuring compliance with these standards. The committee encouraged these regional entities to effectively enforce regulations that contribute to the overall well-being and safety of consumers.

The gathering witnessed the active participation of over 50 officials, including Commissioners of Food Safety (CFS), representatives from states and UTs, senior officials from FSSAI, and key figures from nodal ministries. Notably, members representing diverse stakeholders, ranging from the food industry and consumers to agriculture, laboratories, and research institutions, also took part in the discussions.

This proposed extension of food business operator licenses from one year to five years is seen as a step forward in reducing administrative burdens for FBOs and enhancing the efficiency of regulatory processes. It acknowledges the evolving nature of the food industry and aims to strike a balance between ensuring consumer safety and fostering a conducive environment for food-related businesses.

As the FSSAI works towards modernizing its approach to food safety and standards, this recommendation from the central advisory committee reflects the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders to create a regulatory framework that is both robust and adaptable to changing dynamics. The decision, if implemented, is expected to have a positive impact on the ease of doing business in the food sector while maintaining a strong focus on consumer protection and product quality.
