In a bid to promote consumer protection and ensure the quality of jewellery products, the Chennai branch of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) recently organized an enlightening sensitization and awareness programme in Ranipet. The event focused on highlighting the significance of product certification, including the ISI mark, management systems certification, hallmarking of gold and silver jewellery, artefacts, and laboratory services.
The day-long programme, which took place at the Collectorate in Ranipet, was inaugurated by S. Valarmathi, the esteemed Collector of Ranipet. With the participation of government officials from the district, the event aimed to shed light on the various activities and the latest initiatives undertaken by BIS. G. Bhavani, Director & Head of BIS in Chennai, took the stage to explain the objectives of the programme, emphasizing the importance of consumer awareness and protection. Adding to the notable presence was Mr. Dhinesh Rajagopalan, Deputy Director of BIS, who actively participated in the event.
Jewellery hallmarking, a key focus of the programme, plays a crucial role in assuring consumers of the purity and authenticity of precious metal items. By certifying the quality of gold, silver, and other precious metal jewellery, hallmarking helps consumers make informed purchasing decisions and safeguards their interests. The BIS awareness programme aimed to educate both consumers and government officials about the significance of hallmarking and its positive impact on the jewellery industry.
With the rising concerns over counterfeit and low-quality jewellery products in the market, the BIS programme served as a vital platform to raise awareness and bridge the knowledge gap. By disseminating information about the hallmarking process, consumers can now distinguish genuine products from substandard imitations, ensuring they receive the value they deserve for their investments.
The event also served as an opportunity for BIS to highlight their role in certifying various products and services, guaranteeing their compliance with national standards. By explaining the importance of product certification and management systems, BIS aims to enhance the overall quality of goods available to consumers, while fostering a culture of trust and reliability in the marketplace.
The successful awareness programme organized by BIS in Ranipet underscores the organization’s commitment to consumer welfare and the promotion of a thriving and transparent business environment. By empowering consumers with knowledge and encouraging adherence to quality standards, BIS is playing a pivotal role in safeguarding consumer interests and elevating the Indian jewellery industry to new heights.
