In a recent announcement, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has declared that a BIS license will be compulsory for the manufacturing, importing, or selling of 24 specific footwear products, effective from July 1st.
During a media briefing held in New Delhi, Director General of BIS, Pramod Kumar Tiwari, emphasized the significance of the Quality Control Orders recently issued by the government for footwear and other related products.
Mr. Tiwari highlighted that the development of standards for footwear products involved collaboration with trade and industry bodies, consumer organizations, and representatives from various stakeholder groups. The aim was to ensure the production of high-quality and authentic footwear items.
To facilitate compliance for small-scale and micro-scale industries, the implementation date has been set to January 1st of the following year.
Furthermore, Mr. Tiwari announced a recent government decision to reduce testing charges by 80% for footwear products falling under the Quality Control Orders. This reduction is specifically applicable to certified start-ups and micro industrial units, providing them with cost-saving benefits.
The introduction of the BIS license requirement aims to enhance the quality of footwear products available in the market and provide consumers with reassurance regarding the authenticity and reliability of the products they purchase.
The move is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to streamline and regulate the footwear industry, ensuring that both domestic and imported products meet the necessary quality standards set by the BIS.
The 24 footwear products subject to the new BIS licensing requirement will be specified by the bureau, and manufacturers, importers, and sellers operating in this sector are advised to obtain the necessary licenses to continue their operations legally.
By imposing stricter quality control measures and offering support to smaller businesses, the BIS aims to boost consumer confidence in the footwear market while promoting the growth and development of the industry as a whole.
With the implementation date just around the corner, stakeholders in the footwear industry must prepare for the changes ahead and ensure compliance with the new regulations to avoid any disruptions in their business operations.
